Aldrich, Mildred A Hilltop on the Marne: Being Letters Written June 3 - September 8, 1914 Boston Houghton Mifflin 1915 Hard Cover Very Good - Green cloth hardcover with very bright and clear gilt spine and front cover lettering, 1917 reprint with the author's "Note To The Tenth Impression" dated at "La Creste, Huiry, France, February, 1916", 188 pages plus detailed endpaper maps of the area and 5 contemporary black-and-white photographs including "the house on the hilltop" and a frontpiece medallion profile of the author protected by an intact tissue page; very light shelf wear and corner bumps, bookplate and signatures of three previous owners, but tight in binding, otherwise clean and unmarked throughout. Lovely little book by a published American author who had the (mis?)fortune to move to France's Valley of the Marne River in June, 1914, just 2 months before the incident at Sarajevo; this volume comprises letters by local residents and soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force who partially fought the great Battle of the Marne from the lady's backyard.
